Morning Session: The First Date and Beyond: How to work well with all kinds of parents.

Topics for the morning session: the importance of getting the "first date” right including:

A. The parent in front of you

  • Oddest conferences and most challenging conferences—audience
  • The importance of getting the "first date” right
  • Hidden components present in parent/teacher interactions
  • Styles of parent presentation
  • Parent learning styles
  • What happens when two parents don’t agree with each other
  • Styles of parental anger
  • Parent personalities and emotional make-up

B. Techniques to avoid

  • Verbal language styles
  • Body language styles
  • Note-taking issues
  • Quick reassurances

C. Interactions

  • General thoughts to keep in mind with every interaction
  • Planning for the interaction
  • What to watch out for in yourself
  • Ways to calm down an angry or upset parent
  • Email rules

D. Ways to raise concerns without raising anger

  • How to name the concern
  • How to present the concern
  • How to foster hope in the parent

For each of these topics, you will get specific ideas and language to use to enhance the likelihood of having a positive, productive parent relationship. There will be opportunity throughout to bring up actual interactions and how to modify or repair them in the future.


Afternoon Session: Young Children, New Beginnings: How to understand and respond well.

A. The world from a young child’s point of view

  • Concrete language
  • Transitions
  • Anxious children

B. What to know about yourself

  • Rate of speech
  • Level of unintended intensity
  • Level of comfort with unpredictability

C. What to know about the child

  • Language skills: receptive and expressive
  • Attention skills
  • Temperament and reactivity
  • General anxiety levels across various situations
  • Social language skills

D. How to interact and set limits calmly (at least most of the time!)

  • Use of rules and routines
  • Words that enhance limits and support self-control
  • Time language
  • Techniques to avoid

E. Ways to provide reassurance and foster competence

  • Ways to praise
  • Calming techniques and language
  • Self-management phrases to teach


Participants are welcome to bring examples of complicated or challenging children, and we will work through what might be behind the behaviors, and how best to respond..

About Our Presenter

Rick Irving is a clinical social worker with over 40 years experience working with children, families and schools. He has held the role of a Clinical Director of a residential treatment center for emotionally troubled adolescents. 


For 26 years, he served as a clinical social worker in the Andover Public Schools, working with students and their parents at all grade levels. For over 30 years he has maintained a private practice supporting children with behavioral, emotional and learning disabilities. He also consults to parents and schools about their children’s issues. 


Rick has been a keynote speaker throughout Massachusetts and overseas, including at conferences in Nice, Rome, Madrid, Birmingham and Stockholm.


He has consulted to schools in Brussels, Amsterdam, The Hague, Madrid and Rome.
